North Eastern Thailand
|
The Northeastern region comprises about one-third of the Kingdom's total area, and sits on the elevated Khorat plateau. The Phu Pan mountain range runs down the middle of the plateau, and effectively divides the region into 2 parts, the Mekong River Valley and the Khorat Plains. The numerous archeological sites of ancient civilization and prehistoric era dinosaurs in Khon Kaen, Loei and Kalasin provinces have led to significant discoveries, with more new ones being unearthed daily. Area Museums make for a unique contact with this part of history with exhibit's that are presented in an environment that brings you very close to each exhibit. The area provides superior museum exhibit's and many other opportunities for archeology buffs. Though the area is made up of many diverse minority groups, the local people exist in peaceful harmony with each other. Often characterized as hard working, they are also artistically creative, as seen in the exquisite designs on silk cloths and other handicraft products. The very friendly and accommodating people add pleasure to any visit to the area. It is considered the nation's poorest region because of it's arid, infertile soil. This region is however, very rich in culture and has many historical heritage sites that were mainly the result of influence by the Khmer Empire of old. Beautiful natural scenery and wonderful people, plus a tantalizingly spicy cuisine and exquisite silk production entice visitors to this part of the Kingdom.
